Sam replacement?
(Anonymous) 2009-09-27 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)In that context, he was the older brother still looking out for his little bro and unfortunately, I saw the same thing in the Dean/Cas scene. It was a cute moment but it's as if Castiel is a Sam-replacement, which did not sit well with me. The line "I haven't had this much with Sam" just screams "Castiel's just a replacement". It was like the Sex and Violence episode with the succubus. Dean had fun with the guy, more fun that he had in a long time, yet what he really craved (as mentioned by the succubus) was his brother. And again, I see the same thing here as well.
I know a lot of Dean/Cas fans loved this episode, but I wanted something less "I miss my brother but that's okay, Cas can take over". I want to see something genuine from Dean in regards to Castiel, and not just because he's angry at his brother and looking for someone else that can take Sam's place. I want Dean to really appreciate Cas for Cas. Maybe that's just me.
Re: Sam replacement?
I think he did. Look at their last scene together, where Dean checked to make sure Cas was okay and then encouraged him in his quest to find God even though Dean himself was an atheist - that was really good friend behavior. Yes, Dean's time with Castiel was contrasted with Dean's time with Sam several times during the episode, but I don't know why it has to be an either/or situation. Dean misses and loves Sam. He also had fun with Cas as Cas. I doubt, for example, that Dean will just drop Castiel as a friend once he's got Sam back.
