Yeah, I don't mean to hate on the movie, I just didn't think it would satisfy me as someone who loves the books! They're very YA, especially in the beginning, but the world building and plot are great, and I found the characters refreshingly nuanced. I loved them as a young reader and when I last came back to them as an adult, I felt they held up pretty well. I'd like to see a TV series adaptation because I think that format would allow for exploring the world and focusing on various character interactions.

Also I'd love to see the story animated, as long as I'm dreaming, but I think live action TV would be cool.

Oh I'm agreeing with you that whatever concept the books have would likely have worked better as a show rather than a movie, it felt like it was doing a lot and yet also explained pretty much nothing at the same time. Which was a thing, and yeah it being animated would work really well for the movie cities part. I'm just going by what I've seen as I lack book context, the setting certainly seemed different and fun at any rate.
