I could have written this secret. Where did fun AMVs go? I miss 2012.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-15 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of them got DMCA'd, but a lot also got purged when the people who made them hit their "omg, fandom is so cringe" phase in their early twenties. They'll regret purging all their fan shit when they hit their nostalgic forties though.

There are a lot of vids on AO3 under the tag "Fanvids". That's where I go.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-15 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well TIL. I had no idea there was a fanvid tag or that vids were posted to ao3. Thanks anon!

It is a real crime. I remember a few years ago I wanted to both take a trip down memory lane and see what was out there at the time so I did exactly that - went to YT and typed in a few fandoms or pairings + AMV - and I was incredibly disappointed by the lack of results. Or rather, just random ass promotional stuff.

Good fanvids used to be so good and how I discovered a lot of good music.

I miss them too, truly a fantastic cornerstone of fandom. I wonder if the rampant copyright issues on YT are to blame? Or perhaps it's out of style now in modern fandom? Hard to tell, but it's a sad loss.

Copyright takedowns are a huge part of it, but don't underestimate the way fandom under 25 engages with video content. They're on tiktok all day watching shorts, they've seen every scene from every anime edited down to just the punchline. That's just how they do. They don't need artfully edited music videos that fit the clips so beautifully, that's too much.

fwiw a lot of smaller midwest cons still have AMV contests, and I know of a couple of creators who still host their entries on youtube because they're so small they fly under the radar, but midwest cons have always been doing things that are passe in other parts of the country, so I'm not shocked that AMVs are still holding out around here.

I've tried to watch a few tiktok edits, mostly out of sheer hunger for the old AMV style, and I could not get into them. It was three to four 2 sec scenes that were jumped together to a music beat and it was just... so bad? Where was the narrative? Where was the theme? Where was the emotional gut punches that remind you why you like the ship???

Might be the old person in me but it felt so creatively empty, like something I could cobble together in 5 mins.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-16 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Also there are repeats. Like it's a video less than a minute and it has 5 scenes going round and round. Bleh

artfully edited music videos that fit the clips so beautifully, oh fuckin' please, get over yourself. There were dreck AMVs then and there's dreck edits now.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-15 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't even call them AMVs anymore - they're edits that last less than a minute :'(

We use to have longer - we use to have to listen to music through AMVs before music companies caught on that they could upload official music videos too!

every time i see an amv or a fanvid called a "meme" i die a little inside. that's not what that word means!!

(Anonymous) 2025-02-16 04:05 am (UTC)(link)

God, same. The days of 4 minute videos of your favorite ship and/or favorite characters to a kickass tune is such a bygone era. I miss it so much.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-16 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing recently. I missed this a lot too!

(Anonymous) 2025-02-16 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I meant to write "I miss".

I find some here or there, but yeah, it's not like how it was in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Tangent: This secret just made me remember when my best friend (who's not really into internet culture but active in some fandoms) first discovered fanmade MVs for ships. I think he found it at some FB Disney fanpage he follows. It was a FMV of Prince Eric and Aladdin (I think) based off an AU fanfic.
I can't recall if he thought it was a legit official trailer from Disney or if he was surprised to find M/M shipping in the Disney fandom.
XD
It was so sweet to see him be excited to see gay shipping in Disney related stuff. He's a huge Disney fan.

Slash fandom in Disney is still pretty actively generating content, especially on A03!

The actual innovation I like is people turning still manga and webtoon panels into animated edits using whatever tool it is that makes it look like they're swiveling on an angle. I feel like you could use that for something really inventive, if you were willing to sustain the energy to edit something that lasted longer than a minute. We can be literally be making fanvids of stuff not originally in video format! Why are we not maximising this?
