Alarmism

(Anonymous) 2025-02-21 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
First off, I can't stand this (US) administration and hate everything the MAGA types are doing.

BUT.

There are people online freaking out about things that actually aren't true. The "women won't be allowed to vote if their married name doesn't match their birth certificate!" thing is one I saw this week, and it is patently untrue; people all over the US get RealID when we get driver's licenses in most states and passports in the usual way and these are fine for proving your identity to vote. If you change your name, you have to change it on your documents, so this is not an issue? Too many people are having fits on social media explicitly to farm engagement, and this is a distraction from things that we actually need to pay attention to. (I would add that this is also dumb legislation; it's hard to get people to voluntarily vote anyway and yes, it could make people think they can't register, but almost all adults need verified ID to work or consume services anyway and there are not droves of non-citizens trying to vote so it's very stupid.)

It is not alarmist. It is the first step. Not everyone has RealID or a passport. Yes, for now, it is possible to get such things. But this will cause issue for those whose names don't match their birth certificate. And this doesn't just affect married women who changed their names. Anyone who changed their names for any reason is affected. Trans people are affected, and so is anyone who changed their name to get away from an abusive family system, or any other reason.

All MAGA legislation is dumb. It doesn't mean it isn't also harmful.

So many people thought Roe v Wade wouldn't be overturned. And then it was. And birth control wouldn't be threatened. Until it was. Just because it is taking a long time doesn't mean taking away our rights isn't their end goal.

I personally have had a RealID since 2019 and haven't changed my name. It's nice to live in a good neighborhood where you don't have to lock your doors at night, but I'm not going to get complacent just because for now, people's homes are being broken into in a city that's not mine.

There are plenty things to shake your head at when it comes to Trump's stupid decisions. Threats to voting rights isn't one of them.

The road to fascism is paved with people saying to not be alarmist.

Trump wants to dismantle the Post Office and bring USPS under his direct control.

D'you think if we stick a lightning rod on (first US Post-Master, among many other things) Ben Franklin's grave he might return from the dead, movie Frankenstein's creature-style, and then fry Trump with lightning, Palpatine-style?

Idk, I'm gonna yell at my senators tomorrow, but demanding "ffs this is illegal and unconstitutional, fucking stop him" hasn't actually stopped most of this bullshit.

It's up to individual judges, which judgements Trump's admin is ignoring when it suits them, plus anything that makes it to the Supreme (Kangaroo) Court is just gonna get rubber-stamped anyway.

Tbh I wish Dem congresscritters would bail on the Republicans and head out somewhere public in DC, and invite a bunch of Associated Press reporters (and a few from other newsrooms that got booted from the Whitehouse press corps to make room for OAAN et al) while they listed all the shit Americans, especially Trump voters, take for granted that Trump & co. are taking away.

Like "hi, this is Senator So-and-So, and I'm here with my colleagues to let you know our Republican counterparts aren't even bothering to cut funding for Social Security and Medicare or the Post Office or the National Parks themselves, they're just letting Trump and Musk steal their funding and close them down."
