learning that I could just not finish a book and nope out of it a whatever chapter was a freeing experience. I'd never done that before.

It was a Guy Gavriel Kay book, I cannot recall the title but I noped out about chapter five or six. I had asked for recs on fantasy in an Eastern setting but it was just so egregiously "hey did you know this is China? look everything is so Chinese, don't you just Chinese how Chinese we are? China!" It didn't let the setting speak for itself, and by chapter five was spending more time explaining the very Chineseness of the buildings and the music and the armor that it wasn't giving the characters any sort of personality whatsoever.

Yeah, I quite liked his Byzantium-inspired books but the Chinese-inspired ones were very like this.
