I really wish that the term “blackface” had kept its strong association with stereotyped caricatures.

There are other conversations to be had about non-black actors playing black characters, or non-Jews playing Jewish characters. That’s a question of opportunity (and perhaps authenticity).

But I think it is helpful to separate it from the conversations about “blackface” in the sense of performing highly racist stereotypes in a mocking way.

This secret is the first use of "Jewface" I've run into, but I was always really uncomfortable with "yellowface." It's racist to call Asian people "yellow," so who decided yellowface was the right word to use for criticism of racist casting? Even if the answer to that is "somebody Asian," it's still uncomfortable. At least when other races use it, like the white friend I first heard it from.

Yeah, I'm not fond of it either, but an Asian friend explained it to me as "when they dress up white people as Asian people they literally make them yellow" and he's not wrong.

That's actually a good comparison because it includes the nasty stereotypes, not just a physical thing.

I wondered about that. Adrian Brody isn't Jewish? He also played Władysław Szpilman.

SA: Sorry, *Adrien. From wikipedia: Brody's father is of Polish Jewish descent...[Brody's mother] was raised Catholic, and is the daughter of a Catholic Hungarian aristocrat father and a Czech Jewish mother.

I think this secret is about Felicity Jones and their daughter. AFAIK, all other Jewish characters were portrayed by actors of Jewish descent.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-22 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I thought Ariane Labed was also Jewish.

Swing and a miss from our resident Mossad stan.

Shouldn't you be out there trying to turn an obvious cock up into a warcrime to justify some more ethnic cleansing?

Aren't you too busy sucking up to the islamofascist rapists? Don't forget to visit the local queer culture, the roof jumping won't do itself!
