I'm terrified right now.

I had my first mammogram, and they want me to come back. They said my breast tissue is dense, and therefore more prone to cancerous growths. They also found "focal asymmetry" in my left breast.

I'm trying to be brave, and casual, and reasonable, but I'd be lying if I'm not going to be worried until I get back in the doctor's office for an additional screening like they want me to.

Oh, nonny, I'm so, so sorry. That's awful and scary. I really hope everything is okay.

It's 100% normal to get an alarming report on a first mammogram because they have no baseline. Also, if you're American, remember this is a for-profit industry that makes its money by doing all the additional screening they can justify to insurance companies.

I went through this a few years ago. I had my first mammogram ($150), which they thought looked concerning, so I had an ultrasound ($400), which showed that I needed a needle biopsy ($800), which came back negative but required a follow-up diagnostic ($400) that showed the concerning area had completely disappeared. What a relief! So glad it only took $1750 after insurance to have such peace of mind.

Weird, I just got my resukts bavk amd they want me to come in for more tests because of dense tissue. I'm not really too stressed because dense breast tissue is pretty normal for my family. I hope its just a regular dense tissue thing for you and the next tests come back all clear!

I just recently had my first mammogram and the nurse technician told me that around 80% of people are called back for the first one because there's no reference, and you're more likely to be called back if you have dense breast tissue and to not be too concerned.

I used to go for mammograms only until they told me I had dense breast tissue and needed a sonogram of them on top of that! I have a cyst that we must keep watch on and some calcifications.

I was with my mom during her first mammogram in many years. They said her breasts looked oddly dense and the specialist was going to be there later that day so we waited for like two hours. My mother was the most petrified I've ever seen her (she watched her grandmother die of it, but that had environmental factors). Turns out that breast-feeding for ten years will make your boobs look funny. Nothing wrong at all.

Of course you're worried, it's perfectly natural. I had a similar experience with one of my earlier mammograms because of dense breast tissue and had to go to a different location and use a more sophisticated machine (don't recall the terminology), then wait while the doctor reviewed the results. It was fine, and nothing to worry about. It's standard procedure to be cautious, I think, especially because like another nonny said, this is your first time and they want to establish a proper baseline of what's normal for you, because it'll be the yardstick they measure by for future mammograms.

Hope you get good news soon, and I'll be sending good wishes your way.

I'm having surgery next week... Once I was on the conveyor belt I found it all very routine. They know what they're doing and the mammograms are there precisely to catch this shit early. And at least no-one's telling me it's all in my mind.

/invisibly, chronically ill anon

All the best to you - you can do this!
