I've seen the touring Broadway performance at a local venue, and "spectacle" is the perfect word to describe it. Everything - music, set, lighting, costumes - is a feast for the senses.

I feel like ALW dropped off in popularity after the 90s and is kind of seen as passe and uncool to popular audiences now. I'm sure there's some sort of drama that also makes it problematic to enjoy or support because that's what generally happens when something becomes uncool or overly hyped. And of course classical musicians have always rolled their eyes at his work because how dare anyone make opera accessible to the plebes.

I watched the 24th anniversary show at the Royal Albert Hall and might be slightly obsessed now. Specifically with Hadley Fraser/Raoul. I was not anticipating this AT ALL.

I'm not in the US or UK and watched it when it came to my city, and it was fantastic! Definitely worth seeing, doesn't have to be one of the big famous performances to be terrific.

My problem isn't so much that liking ALW isn't very cool, but that I think he's a great big twat as a person and I hate when I want to give him money.

I saw PotO, not on Broadway, in a smaller city, and it was really great. If you get the chance to see it somewhere you'd feel comfortable, please do.

I've worked on a lot of his shows and met him many times. I think he's very much on the spectrum, he's an odd chap.

This is a lovely secret, and I hope you get the chance to see it.

The only people who actively hate ALW are people who believe every musical should be like Sondheim. There is nothing wrong with enjoying an ALW score.
