I didn’t watch it, but I don’t think the US has any reason to be involved in this war. I don’t understand why we’re funding it while our own people suffer poverty, food insecurity, lack of healthcare, injustice, and egregious income inequality. I don’t understand why the US has to be the country to broker a peace deal. Mostly, I don’t understand why having beliefs like this is controversial and will get me called a troll or called Vlad.

Our president is an absolute embarrassment, but I just can’t understand any of this US involvement in Ukraine. As I understand it, Biden had become put out with Ukraine by the end of his term as well.

Because we understand Russia won't stop at Ukraine and will spread outward even further? Like, this is textbook Russian strategy at this point. "Oh THIS time I've stopped, I promise!" says Vlad only to do another invasion some years later. Are we supposed to sit by and let Russia slowly consume all of Europe?

The US suffers all those things because billionaires won't pay their fair share in taxes, and many jobs do not pay a living wage. People continuously vote against their self-interests and install conservative politicians who pass legislation that burdens the lower and middle classes and rewards corporations and the obscenely rich. Not because we're funding a war.

The US has as much of a reason to be involved in war as much as you have a reason to speak up when you see displays of bigotry happening to your neighbors. "I don't need to be involved because it's not MY business, the bully isn't messing with ME" can be just as childish and selfish a view as "I need to have my hand in everything and be RELEVANT!" IMO the entire world should be helping Ukraine, not just the US (though I guess that's gonna change now, thanks to some rotting orange shit stain).

I think anon is asking an honest question, but countries tend to aid their allies when they're being invaded. We've also been struggling with these things before Russia invaded Ukraine, and before Biden or Trump was elected.

I think it might be time for a history lesson. Starting after WWII, the US led a coalition of countries and we got the nickname ‘leader of the free world’. We made mistakes, obviously, but we were considered the leader, the country that all other countries supported and emulated.
The war in Ukraine, which Russia started by invading a sovereign nation, is the kind of situation where everybody looks to the US to lead. That’s why we’re involved.
I am not discounting your concerns about our own problems within our country; they are valid concerns! But we used to be able to balance internal and external problems. The disfunctionality of the past twenty years I blame on the intractability of the Republican Party and the stupidity of the Democratic Party. Both sides have forgotten that they are to govern us, the people of the United States.

Leaving aside the condescension of your first sentence, thank you for taking me in good faith and not giving me moral lessons.

I don't want America to be the leader of the free world. It seems like it's caused a lot of problems in the past 80 years. I think it's arrogant and unfair to everyone for America to act as if we are uniquely positioned to install, protect, and police democracy across the globe. Going further back in history, FDR was a staunch isolationist because he thought America should concentrate on fixing American problems. And he fixed a lot of them.

Of course, now Trump is using the office to take a wrecking ball to those social protections and using America's position in the world to be a bully and a tyrant. It's disgraceful and deeply disturbing, and I agree it is in large part due to the unfortunate truth that we no longer have a functional legislative branch.

I feel similar anon. America has killed so many innocents in the name of democracy and freedom, supposedly the price that had to be paid for invading countries to overthrow corrupt leaders. Such arrogance and cruelty.

I apologize, I did not mean to be condescending.

I agree that is hubris on our part to take the position that we know best and dictate that to the world. Yes, we should focus on our own problems, but again, that dysfunctional legislative branch is, well, highly dysfunctional!

I do not believe the current administration is capable of looking beyond what their dear leader wants, and his narcissistic ass is incapable of thinking of other people at all.

So I don't know the answers, I don't trust that anyone in charge of the government is making good or wise decisions, and I'm sorry we're in this situation.

You seriously think the money spent on assisting Ukraine defend itself against Russia would actually go towards health care and social projects? No. No it wouldn't. It would be used for one of the myriads of other military expenses or another US meddling project. No involment in Ukraine would mean exactly zero cent more in the pockets of the poor.

Because we have commitments with NATO, and we understand that Putin will not stop with Ukraine.
