While the series was running people tended to overlook him, but he underwent a lot of growth as a character. I think many readers could identify with Matsuda as the "common man" character, fumbling, enthusiastic yet feeling a little lost and impotent. He also showed the emotional ambiguity of some spectators of Kira, having conflicting feelings about their moral stance.
Added to all that he was adorable and funny, in a series about death!

(And because I managed to avoid spoilers there where several scenes were I was terrified he was going to die. I was always so happy when he made it through.)

From a fangirl standpoint, I tend to fangirl more over Light (I seem to have a pattern of having a thing for megalomaniacs in fiction, do not ask me why), but...
I seriously have never felt a more deep connection with a fictional character. There are so many times in that series where I just FELT for Matsuda so strongly... knowing what it's like to crave approval so much and so often get pushed to the side, but STILL remaining optimistic... the fact that he wasn't really ever sure whether trying to stop Kira was right or wrong, but that in the end it came down to YOU DO NOT FUCKING BREAK HIS TRUST OR LIE TO HIM, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I relate to this so much. He is my fictional other half. XD
and I am trying so so hard not to make Sayu a total Mary-Sue in my fic about them. I can't project myself onto Sayu; if I did, a relationship with Matsuda would be redundant as hell and would be horribly written because all of the characters would be meno subject
