I always HATED that part. I felt so bad for Ianto- I don't know what was worse- Jack and Gwen acting the way that they did, or Ianto having to cut in, or the fact that Jack didn't focus on Ianto during that part. Ianto deserved better. It was one more of those instances where you have to wonder what they the writers were thinking...

[identity profile] goatsfoot.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
writers' intentions =/= avoiding character conflict/turmoil

writing fiction =/= inflicting cruelty

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I very much agree with you here, but there's creating drama and tension in a story and then there's pointless jerky behavior. I only have a problem with the latter when TPTB themselves don't seem to get what they're doing, or how unsympathetic they're making their characters out to be. If it's intentional, I'm cool with it - it's when they don't seem to realize how negatively their characters are being portrayed that there's an issue.

I don't know Torchwood too well, but I'm thinking that [livejournal.com profile] traciaknows meant something along those lines.

[identity profile] goatsfoot.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah... if the TPTB are badly writing the characters, then it's such a waste. The fact that TPTB seem to think Gwen is the heart of the show worries me - surely she isn't from the way we see her on the screen? Also, some of the things that Jack has done has really been much more horrible than he seemed to have been set up by the writing to be paid for (except arguably in CoE).

I can get behind writing dystopia and how fucked up working at Torchwood 3 can make you, if that is totally what they're driving at, but I really think the writers just didn't quite spend the time sitting down with each other comparing notes and considering where they were actually going with the characters.

[identity profile] goatsfoot.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
* although, sorry, i may have inferred that you were condemning the writers for portraying those characters like you described, as opposed to asking what the writers were actually intending themselves with the characterisation. which is something that mystifies me somewhat with TW.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry you feel that way in life, and I hope you find something better, but AMEN and HALLELUJAH for seeing exactly what was happening in that scene.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus fucking Christ on a popsicle stick. Do you have any idea how rude and selfish it is to gloat to someone about something that's making that person feel bad?

We all know you hate Ianto. Hell, I'm barely in the Torchwood fandom and I know you hate Ianto. Can't you shut up about it occasionally? What you say on your own journal is your own business, but what you did here is fucked up.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2009-10-01 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
No. I'm hoping the OP finds something better and offering sympathy for what she's going through in real life. And I'm glad to see people not claiming (as I heard so many times) that Jack was all about Ianto in that scene.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
OP loves Ianto more than cheese, and I think it was pretty obvious that he was getting the shaft there. :\ This TW fan stays away from its fandom for the most part (not ready for the crack and analysis yet), so had no idea that it could possibly be interpreted otherwise. Ianto was being flatly ignored until he forced his away in, and even then was just being humored and/or a binkie to replace someone who'd made their choice.

And thank you. <3 s!b everyone thinks we're the happiest poly couple in fandom. :/

I agree. But I promise, I was told over and over that Jack wasn't and couldn't possibly be pining for Gwen the entire time he was dancing with Ianto. Because of course, Jack never wanted Gwen and they have no chemistry whatsoever. I was told emphatically that I was a delusional Gwack shipper. (I'm not, I'm a Jack/Owen, Jack/Doctor, Jack/ABI shipper.)

So I'm always elated when a Ianto fan or J/I shipper can look at the scene and see it as I always did.

And I offer honest sympathy if you're going through that. Trust me, life is too short to be a bit player in someone else's soap opera. Go find someone who really wants you.

That scene really didn't bother me that much. I mean, it was a bit tacky and low-class of Gwen to be behaving that way on her wedding day, but it seemed more of a "Jack saying goodbye" moment to me. I can't recall any blatant Jack/Gwen after that. I don't know, it was bittersweet to me, finally laying it to rest, and I don't think it takes anything away from his relationship with Ianto either. They care about eachother, but they both chose some one else. I liked it, but I might be weird that way.

And that bit at the end, where Jack looks at the picture of his own wedding, it makes me think quite a bit of Jack's emotional constipation in that episode wasn't Gwen-related at all.

But still tacky.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
OP does not really question Jack's behavior too much; it was kind of a fucked-up moment for him all around, though he could have behaved a LOT better. But seriously, poor Ianto. :/ Even if he understood, which he probably did.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
It was kind of a crap moment, but I guess that I think Ianto understands and is ok with Jack's 51st century ability to care for more than one person so if he wasn't offended or upset by it, or questioning his position in Jack's life, I'm not going to be.

But I can completely understand how other might be. Honestly, I felt more sorry for Rhys in that situation because I'm sure he doesn't have Ianto's patience or understanding.

That is one impressive eyerake that guy has there.

[identity profile] totaldrwhofreak.livejournal.com 2009-10-01 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, you just ruined that entire scene for me :(
