It is the reason people choose different type faces. Someone, say, wouldn't use bubble lettering for a press-release or in a professional situation at all. It looks cheap and silly.
Papyrus is the epitome of this principle, because as a font, it is highly aesthetically pleasing. However, because of this fact, its original meaning has been lost, leaving it a tool for people who don't know how to interpret font or communicate in a visual language- in other words; they choose it because it looks pretty, and it floods the internet, and the advertising columns, and pamphlets- because it becomes a default for people who feel the need to choose something that isn't "Times New Roman".
Therein, you see, people lose the very thing different fonts were supposed to accomplish: Individuality. By having EVERYONE use the same font (Papyrus) it removes a level of personality that the type was supposed to inspire to begin with. What this does is make using Papyrus, a very pretty and unique font, commonplace and therefore generic, and therefore horrible.
Let me TL:DR this:

TL DR:
Using Papyrus is like saying "I want to use a nice font that really speaks to me, but since I can't find any; I'll use this one" Papyrus is a lovely font that is so abused by multiple scenarios where it just doesn't belong, that it's stopped being a nice font, and started to be simply a 'user interface' font. One that can be interchangeable with, say, arial. That makes me very sad. :/

How do you know Papyrus isn't a lovely font that speaks to the people who are using it? And I just don't think generic/standard is the epitome of horrible.
But then, clearly, I am not a font snob.

Generic isn't ALWAYS horrible. I just happen to believe that with so many millions of fonts available, one could at least attempt to find one that had some sort of intellectual value. Like using a font for lists in a list secret, or block text for a grunge secret.
It's just that when someone is nit-picking, and then uses PAPYRUS, it sort of just negates their nit-picking imo. It's sort of like saying you care about a speck of dust on your floor, but don't mind all the garbage.
But as you pointed out; not all people are font snobs. Some people's pet peeves happen to be noticing typography. I'm actually not that bad, but papyrus and comic sans are just my little salt-in-the-wound pet peeve in the typography category.

Just for interest's sake, what kind of situation do you think IS appropriate for Papyrus? I assumed by the name and the look of the font that it's supposed to carry a biblical feel and that the OP actually used it right, but clearly more than one person here thinks otherwise.
