I LOLed at your alternative suggestions, OP! I don't read enough fic to be bothered by cliched phrases, but I do get it re: "shit-eating grin" because I've seen it used in fandoms where the tone just... doesn't really match the character, or the setting, or something. Most of the time plain old "grin" works just fine, but for older settings, I prefer "smirk".

Agreed if it is not a comedy or parody type fic. I use the phrase myself IRL but it would probably take me out of a serious story.

I don't know whether I agree or disagree or agree to disagree, but this secret made me laugh, so thanks for that, OP.

I don't even read fic anymore but holy fuck I hate that phrase. The gross-out factor is what makes it a vivid description, but it's better suited for comedic stories...

I agree with George Carlin, whoever thought of that phrase was ill

i do think "so smug it's actually disgusting" is sort of the point of that phrase but yeah, but i don't think it needs to be so common.

I agree that the phrase is gross, but it's NOT a fandom/fanfic phrase?? It's a phrase some real people use??

Carding fingers through hair is also not a fandom/fanfic phrase, it has shown up in published books for some time, 'carding' in this case being related to the act of carding wool.

I never know if people who complain about 'fanfic phrases' aren't primarily English speakers or if they just don't read things that aren't fanfic, but nearly every time I see someone complain about a phrase common in fics, it's something I've read in pre-internet books, and I assume fic writers who use those phrases do so because they also read them in books. (this isn't on OP! Like there are a LOT of perfectly good descriptive phrases that have appeared in many a book that people complain about in ways that make me think they're not good at reading in English, 'shit-eating grin' usually isn't one of them, but honestly I am with you on retiring that one unless it's like... the POV of a character who would use that phrase to describe someone, I guess?)

this is my secret, and I while know that the phrase didn't originate in fanfiction, I pretty much exclusively see it there. I can't remember the last time I read a real book that used it. But then, while I do read a lot - normally about 40-50 books a year, I don't read a lot of contemporary or genre fiction, which is where I assume you're more likely to see it now?

Shit-eating grin is fine if used appropriately. It's evocative and funny when the vibe suits.

Don't find it gross, but I am Australian and our slang is typically rough (I know it's not an Aussie phrase fyi).
