Re: I don’t usually like [X], but… – Exceptions to your usual preferences
(Anonymous) 2025-03-07 09:31 am (UTC)(link)Like, I do ship them in every universe, BUT, I think Doc Prime in '85 is gonna STRUGGLE with the age gap in a way that not every version of him does, and he's going to find a lot of reasons to talk himself out of his feelings. Like, in '55, it didn't seem like that much? Sure, Marty's still maybe half his age, at some point he certainly cottons on that this boy is in fact a minor, but at this point, like... A) Marty is validating him and his work in a way that he really needed, and B) a part of him is still thinking, you know, well he's young now but he'll grow up, he's not necessarily fully internalizing the time travel, and C) they only have a week together and they're both men and he's not going to ACT on anything he's feeling anyway so what does it matter if he nurses a crush? But... the Doc of '85 has a whole different perspective! He's seen Marty grow up-- yes, AFTER he met him as someone who, minor or not, acted with adult agency and was someone he viewed as a friend and an equal despite the gap in age/education/life experience, but still! It complicates EVERYTHING and there are so many reasons to continue not to act on those feelings. Like, maybe Jennifer and Marty shouldn't actually stay together, but that doesn't mean she isn't important in the PRESENT, nor does it mean he couldn't have a completely improved future with or without her! (I still think that if Marty makes the first move down the line, where he can say look, I am a legal adult, my high school relationship ran its course and that's normal, you've always respected me, so you can say you think I'm not considering the risks, but don't tell me I don't know what I FEEL and don't tell me I don't know what YOU feel, then... that opens up doors, but it's going to involve a lot of internal struggle to get there)
But Hell Valley? Like, god, they might as well take anything they can get! Everything is terrible all the time, Marty needs a source of support and an escape from home more than ever, between being sent off to and kicked out of different schools, and there is something truly delicious about the TRAGEDY of it, like... of the potential for a forbidden relationship where, getting caught together or just being SUSPECTED is the thing that has Biff arranging for Doc to be locked up (yeah, his main motive is that Doc's the only crazy old scientist he knows and therefore a threat to him re the almanac, but 'this old man is corrupting my young stepson' is GREAT cover that presents him as the good guy) and then Marty sent to a school overseas.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-07 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)Hi, again.
I’ve been meaning to tell you this since January, but I went to see the final Broadway performance of the show on January 5th, and it was the best & also Roger & Casey flirted in character as Doc & Marty & immediately, I thought of you. <3
