ya'll just cry tokenism at everything lmao, she was handled well at least for this part of the season and was a character beyond her trans identity but because the show takes place in south korea her identity is of course going to come up, how would it not???

that isn't tokenism.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)

Disagree. She was handled in a completely hamfisted way, with the writing quality of an After School Special.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
sure jan.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
oh shut the fuck up, i can tell you only can comprehend ameri-centric content and expect everyone else to pander to YOUR views

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Calm down, little girl.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
That’s an interesting response.

I watched a lot of videos by trans people who loved the trans character and all specifically talked about appreciating that she was more than just there to be the Token Trans who Teaches about Transness. Although a few also mentioned that the parts that did feel a bit Trans 101 made sense given that this is a Korean show, and transness is much less visible in Korea than Western countries, so a lot of viewers there actually could learn something new by just finding out that trans people exist (which can be done without being preachy and boring, if as stated before, it's not the main or only thing the character is there for).

But this is pandering to Americans, huh.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
They are not the voice of every trans person.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
> Trans people only exist in america??

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
...This is a Korean show, with little to no trans representation *period*, with a shit ton of people who have no idea that trans people can actually exist and be considered useful and acceptable. This wasn't for Americans, you unfuckable hobgoblin. Be happy that a socially conservative country decided to actually have positive representation no matter how 'hamfisted' you think it is because you're so Ameri-centric and think trickle-down economics works socially. It makes perfect sense she knew what the fuck to do because she was a high ranking goddamned special forces soldier in an efficient military, of course she's going to know shit! GOD I am so sick of this argument

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Settle down, Beavis.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's amazing how you feel so righteous and yet in your comment managed to not only infantilise Koreans but also really, really needed to break out the sexist gendered insults to underscore your argument. Well done, you. Made your whole argument invalid in two easy steps.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not infantilism to say it's normal for Koreans not to know trans people exist. It's true. It was true about Americans too before 15 or so years ago. Concern trolling about racism in order to be transphobic isn't the slick tactic you think it is; we've all seen it hundreds of times over by now.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Crying transphobia is also your way to disguise your obvious sexism so...

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
And homophobia, often times.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't watched it but it's fascinating how trans people are apparently more acceptable/acceptable to portray than gay people. Not saying trans rep is bad/worse than gay rep, mind, just interesting that this is something a lot of conservative countries have in common.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because a trans person can be straight.

Unfortunately, a lot of places treat transition as a way to "fix" gay people. Americans aren't immune to this way of thinking, either. I've come across parents who say they'd rather have a trans child than a gay one.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you OP.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not an expert on Korean society, just an American who tries to understand the world and multiple cultures through many lenses by way of hearing more informed people's experiences and studies.

Of all of the Korean media I've ever watched, I never knew South Korea relied on a lot of migrant workers until season 1 of Squid Game with a nuanced portrayal of the character of Ali.

I haven't watched season 2 of Squid Game, but based on season 1 and knowing that the LGBTQIA+ community in Korea is fairly small and the public at large are fairly ignorant to that community, I can believe that the trans representation was fairly nuanced with complex critique.

It's also so very demeaning to think anything that seems "progressive" is to "cater to Americans/westerners". There are queer people all over the world. These western countries/America have really complex systems and engagement with the LGBTQIA+ community (and at large leans more conservative/bigoted), and so do other countries. Just because you see less of it in the k-dramas you watch doesn't mean there are no trans people in Korea.

A creator who seems to bring light to many of Korea's issues that seem to be similar to/just like other other countries' is often accused of catering to Amercian sensibilities is so fucking ignorant lmao
