Period romances in books and fanfics

Currently trying to give kdramas a chance. I tend to watch kdramas that aren't very popular. Usually I see people say the show is boring or too run-of-the-mill, which makes sense because I tend to like more low stakes drama in my romances.
Pretty sure I've said this before on FS, but it irks me when I watch any Korean media and it unexpectedly is a murder mystery. Like...this is a supposed to be a slice of life show about shopkeeper's daughter trying to stop a major corporation from infiltrating her neighborhood and we have to pause the family drama, building romance between the leads, other characters' side quests to focus on a tense murder mystery? So many kdramas where I liked the show but after about 3-6 episodes I'm tired of all the stalling so I stop watching.
