Just browsing petfinder.

I would recommend doing research on the actual local adoption places and adopt direct, instead of using an aggregate like petfinder. Some places that will have pets appear on it will sketch.

They are all local (you search by a zip code). Or at least as local as I can be with living in a rural area. The closest place (a city over) literally only has pit mixes.

I know how petfinder works. My point is, go find out the local places and research them as rescues/adoption centers. Find out which one/few are good places that treat their animals well and are not-for-profit, instead of using an aggregator that mixes everything together. Your local non-profit will have a smaller adoption fee.

if you're prepared to drive somewhere to pick the dog up anyway, might as well expand your search to your whole state, or larger communities in neighboring states if those are actually closer. A lot of overcrowded shelters esp. in the South, have to send dogs to other states for better chances at adoption, so sometimes you'll find a place go from nothing but pities to a bunch of new and different dogs very quickly. Our county's humane society gets tons of dogs from Texas and Alabama basically every month, and they always get snapped up fast.

Yeah, this was such a big surprise to me when I moved to Minnesota. I was born and raised in Florida, and I was used to all Floridian animals being in the shelters. Hearing about Minnesota shelters taking in animals from the South was a bit of culture shock.
