Season two ends with her leaving town - I would argue it's a hook, not a cliffhanger.
Season five ended with the shot of Buffy's grave. It felt like a series ending - I remember being really surprised when I heard there was another season due.

NAYRT I agree with you. Season 2 felt like a nice breaking point. A change point--perfect for a season end. And Season 5 remains my preferred place to end the series. It was such a good show ender.
