I hate a female character whose worst crime is always picking fights with her so-called best friend. I love tons of male characters whose worst crime is mass murder. It's not about how bad the act is, it's about how close to home it hits and how it's treated in-universe. The "best friend" is never called out for being a shitty friend, she's treated like she's wonderful and the fans are supposed to think she's a good friend. The mass murderers are treated like, well, mass murderers.

*I love tons of female characters whose worst crime is mass murder too, though.

Oh, totally. How the characters are treated in canon makes a big difference. If male/female characters are treated differently in the same circumstances I tend to think it's probably sexism but honestly, there are all sorts of factors that go into why someone likes/dislikes a certain character.
