It's an absolutely ridiculous movie but I love it because it kind of owns how daft it is.

I feel this way about Waterworld. That is one ridiculous movie and I absolutley love it.

One of my longtime favorite movies, surpassed only by Twister (speaking of ridiculous on purpose). I think it's so enjoyable because everything about it succeeds in spite of Kevin Costner - he's there, but it's literally everyhing else except him that works. The excellent British character actors bringing their talent and energy to the script, the setting and pacing, the camera work and editing, and the shameless slapstick action played straight. And of course Alan Rickman's ad-libbing.

I love Twister because it has the same: an ensemble cast better than the leads, random quotable witty dialogue, excellent pacing and editing, and allowing the obvious goofiness to just be goofy. No apologiizing for "Cow!" or trying to make it serious, it's allowed to be goofy.

I remember reading a review about this movie once that said it was like two different movies in one. A boring one that Kevin Costner was in and a fantastic one that Alan Rickman was in.

I think the secret is to get someone who fully commits to the bit like Alan Rickman did.

that's exactly what it is, I've thought the same!

For YEARS afterward I misremembered Alan Rickman's dialogue as being from the parody "Robin Hood: Men In Tights," because it seemed too far OTT to be from the "serious" 90's Robin Hood movie. I was shocked when I realized the truth!

This put into words what I was thinking immediately when seeing the secret. I was like, yeah, Alan Rickman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio were amazing in that, wait, it wasn't really about them, was it? Guess Kevin Costner was there too, but meh.

Fully agreed. I feel this way about several Kevin Costner movies, especially The Postman (and to some extent Waterworld as well).

The newer Jumanji movies might scratch that itch for you, though there isn't a lot of romance in them, there's a bit. Bumblebee is a pretty fun movie. Twisters is decent. But most of the newer adventure movies that I think are good, I wouldn't really call romance. Like, Love & Monsters is a good movie, but it ends up being more about platonic relationships. And the romance aspect in Tomorrowland is incredibly weird on several different levels. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a fun movie, but it's much more about what makes a family than romance. So, yeah, there does seem to be a lack of that type of movie.

I would love a fun action/adventure movie. Uh... maybe with a better lead actor, but that doesn't seem like an impossible ask. Everyone else was great.
