I would love a little backstory on this.

Does she mean Joyce Summers? Why would Joyce need to be raised? Why would Xander’s mom be watching her? What does all of that have to do with Xander standing by some woman? And given that this is Buffyverse, what sort of “facing death” is he talking about?

I don't blame you. I was never a Buffy fan myself, but one of my best friends was a huge fan and couldn't wait to get her hands on the comics... well. She was disappointed, to say the least.
