Re: What's your favorite kind of vacation?

The most relaxed vacations for me are in some big city with lots of interesting culture and good public transit.

I love staying in a rented or borrowed apartment and going out every day to try food, see art, go to a play, just walk around. It feels like a good balance of scheduled and spontaneous. And I feel pretty comfortable in cities, as long as I’ve done some research and have a map. (And now smart phones make that all much easier.)

I’ve had some great rural vacations where it’s mostly about seeing beautiful natural areas. But I find I need more planning to make that work for me. And I’m a bit more nervous about ending up stranded somewhere.

Same!
It's been some time for a lot of reasons, but my best vacation was in Amsterdam - seeing a lot of big and small museums, having a walk around the city, relaxed evenings with food and TV, going to a play, taking a train to Rotterdam etc etc. It's a perfect balance of being busy and relaxing.

Also I love hopping on a train or a bus and exploring smaller towns and remote pretty places, but it needs some planning.
