I want to know where on Earth everyone is still getting that female characters are held to wildly higher standards than male characters and are shredded for being a little imperfect while the worst male characters are above criticism and universally beloved, because all I ever see is the opposite of all that.

Are you referring to gacha games like Genshin Impact? Those are the only games my mutuals who make the "everyone hates female characters" play. The female characters in the games I play are usually popular in the fandoms.

And with Genshin Impact and other gachas, the issue isn't really the female characters themselves (though some of them are decidedly worse written than the male characters) but the way they are obviously written as shitty waifu bait and that's what makes them suck.

Yeah, IME this is true for 9 out of 10 instances of female character "hate" in general - the complaints aren't about the character but rather the way they're written.

Like, personally speaking, I complain a lot about the writing for a particular female character because I actually LIKED that character before the writer decided to shelve all of her character development in favor of having her just orbit around the MC as the Love Interest. She was interesting! She had drive and passion and was pursuing her dreams! ... and then all of that got put on a bus so she could fawn over the MC. Shit like that sucks.

I think areas of fandom have made active effort to not randomly hate on female characters for the crime of existing these days, but it still happens, it really depends on where you are. Also get outside of fandom and my god nerd dudes cannot handle female characters being anything other than background boobs, not even then sometimes if she’s not white.

Yeah, I thought fandom was bad and then I ventured out to more general spaces and was shocked how many backwards angry dudes out there hating on women characters for existing.
