James and the Maurauders picking on a black boy feels so much more ick

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
That is not a bad thing. One of the few things Mister Galbraith did right in his books was showing Harry that his idolized dad and his beloved not-Uncles were kinda douchebags. It made him question his own values, and be a better person for it. And also that you can be a douchebag, but still grow beyond it. Those are valid lessons, and a valid story choices.

JKR excels at making bad decisions. We'll see how this one works out for her.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I thought she didn't have any input on casting.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2025-03-29 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I just think she doesn't care. It's not like she's afraid of saying offensive nonsense.

As long as Daniel, Emma and Rupert don't get the royalties anymore she doesn't care

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Why would they get royalties off the new show? Did they contractually get royalties off the original movies?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
As long as their faces appear on merch and special editions they get royalties. Because they banded together against her due to her transphobia, she doesn't want them to earn a cent.

Not an incel.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sure he isn't

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
In what ways does he fit the definition?

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he joined the equivalent of the nazi party because a woman didn't want to date him and in his view "friendzoned" him, then BETRAYED her because SHE didn't like when HE called her a slur.
Oh, and was perfectly ok with her husband and son getting killed as long as HE got to keep her.

Pretty incel behaviour if you ask me.

DA

I think he can be a shitty creepy possessive person without necessarily being an incel though. I don't think he hated women in general, just was very butthurt about one particular woman? The hating women in general thing is kind of a necessary req for inceldom

DA
Well, we never see him interact with other women at all...

AYRT

lol most incels don't talk to real women either but they have plenty to say about women anyway to other men and kids, unprompted. Incels have a grudge against women and blame them for their involuntary celibacy, it's kind of their defining feature, and if a character hasn't demonstrated that at all it's hard to call them an incel

You can be a creepy desperate loser without being that particular flavor of sexist, plenty of people are

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, sure. But why are we even arguing about what flavour of loser he was? As long as we agree that he was indeed a loser

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
...because somebody literally questioned whether he was one or not? I don't know what you want me to say here.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
it started with someone stating that he is not an incel, it's not the same

Re: AYRT

I haven't read the books or watched the movies in ages because fuck JK Rowling, but wasn't he super shitty to Hermione? I don't even think because she was Harry's friend, but just because she was a "know-it-all". Can't think of any other times where he wasn't shit to a woman...

It's been ages since I read the books, so my memory's a little spotty, but he seemed ok to Narcissa when she went to him, upset over Draco in the beginning of Half Blood Prince.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the casting is a weird choice based for the character in terms of in-universe issues but to pretend handsome POC men can't possibly also be racist incel fuckheads is kind of iffy. Because holy he'll, they sure can be, and ARE irl aplenty.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-29 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Under the right hands, I could see an interesting depiction of a bullied Black boy being singled out by privileged white kids (and Remus having been a plausibly coded disabled kid would have spoke volumes about how he was accepted for his "otherness" and though he could relate to and understand Severus's "otherness", he doesn't stop his friends from bullying Severus because he wouldn't want lose the privilege of having been accepted; like "better Severus get bullied than me").

I don't intend to watch the show and I don't really think the people working on this will have the nuance to make this good or interesting though.
