And, even then, they're often portrayed as doing things for themselves or to get something (ego boost, sex, satisfy their own desire for revenge,...). It's rarely motivated by empathy, or wanting to genuinely support someone in the way they want it or need it and not in the way the male protagonist thinks it needs to be done.
