I don't play Dark Souls (and have only watched the first one played, once)...which one is being pointed to? (I do know they're called Ornstein and Smough, I just don't know which is which.)

I can imagine them both being mispronounced based on the English-language spellings (Ornsteen and Smog (or smohg) respectively)...and would mispronounce Smough, myself, without the kana version in front of me.

If it's Ornstein, I'd find it a bit maddening, too. In 99.9% of cases, 'ei' is pronounced 'I', not 'E', why assume this is an exception? (I'm looking at you, Simon Whistler. v_v)

I can think of many legit ways to pronounce Smough based on other real life surnames! Smogue (rhymes with Vogue), Smuck, Smork or Smore.

Ornstein could be "Stine" or "Shtine" with an outside possibility of Steen.

SA or Smoh I guess based on the kana, like English speaking people say Van Gogh.

Van Gogh actually informs how I would personally mispronounce it, heh. But closer to the standard Dutch pronunciation. Perils of being a word nerd.

Dragonslayer Ornstein is the one being pointed to here, and to be fair I've been playing the series since it started and have only just now learned from this secret that it's canonically Orn-styne and not Orn-steen. Really humbling and glad I'll be able to properly address all my screaming insults at him on my next playthrough.
