I’m not sure “we” are anywhere close to that. There’s always been people with very weird takes (especially on gender and sexuality) and I think the internet (especially social media) has made them more vocal, more noticeable, and more connected.

For example, in pre-social media days, I heard someone argue that butch-femme lesbian couples weren’t really having lesbian relationships.

And “queer” is a messy term. I’m a fan, personally. I think the fuzzy boundaries are a feature, not a bug. But it’s true that it can lead to some people creating especially odd definitions.

I've definitely heard weird takes both in person and on social media across the years. I try to not pay it much mind if I just happen to come across someone's strange theory, I mean, they're entitled to their opinion I guess as long as they're not trying to bother me about mine.
