I once saw an argument that Sonic is what happens when you try to make a character the youths will consider “cool” and actually succeed. Since “cool” changes over time, you’ll lose at least part of your market, and since trying to be cool is uncool, fans will rebel if you openly appeal to them even though appealing to them is the point. (It cited “giving Shadow a gun” as an example of when the series tried so hard to be cool that even cool stuff the fandom previously liked was now retroactively cringe.)
