tb5 - "consulting adults"

you mean consenting.

considering the other mistakes it is highly unlikely, but still, you never know (:

Too Big 6

I agree wholeheartedly, even as someone who loves Ghibli to death and back. This is in my top 6 worst movies I have ever seen.

By the way, I thought I'd clarify as all the comments you are getting is "watch the sub" DON'T WATCH THE SUB. The movie is still utter shit subbed. I haven't watched it dubbed.

I watched the German version so I wouldn't know. I only know that no movie has every made me bawl so hard.

Did you ever think about watching it with the original voice acting and Eng subtitles? I'd be curious to know if you'd feel different about the movie.

PREACH. BLUEBERRY PRIDE. I can't believe people, especially ONTD people, got that Puritanical--it was just a laugh, and it was totally harmless and fun. People comparing him to Roman Polanski and stuff made me stabby with rage. He didn't do a thing wrong; we were all into it and comparing it to rape is hideous. People need to chill the fuck out.

I'd suggest watching it in Japanese/another language with English subs, but I don't think it'd help the snooze factor. :| It was just really drawn out, that can't be fixed with language barriers.

I don't like it either. It's hard for me to feel sorry for Japan considering how racist and nationalistic they still are. That's one of factors that resulted in them being bombed in the first place. INB4 some Japanophile whines at me about how horrible the United States is (as if criticizing another country means you think your own is perfect).

I prefer Barefoot Gen anyway. It's just as even more tragic but it's intelligent as opposed to just being BAWWW THE LITTLE GIRL DIED WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO US

Of course it's Studio Ghibli SO IT MUST BE A MASTERPIECE

Uh, wow. Way to sound racist yourself. The movie wasn't asking anybody to pity the entirety of Japan because oh noes they didn't do anything wrong. The movie was supposed to show you how horrifying the fallout from the bombings was for specific characters who were Japanese. If your response to a movie about Japanese children trying to survive after something so horrible as that is "well it's hard for me to feel sorry for Japan because they're so racist and nationalistic!" it kind of makes you sound like a huge asshole.

Maybe you didn't mean it that way, especially since you're recommending another story about the bombings that you do say is tragic. But holy shit, you don't look at a movie about innocent people caught in the aftermath of something that horrible -- even if it was a necessary action at the time -- and say "nah I don't feel sorry for them because Japan deserved it" without sounding like you're saying "they deserved it because they're Japanese." No matter how hard you try to make it not sound that way, that's what it comes out as.

Uh, wow. Way to sound racist yourself.

Japanese is a nationality, not a race. (The fact that many Japanese people think of themselves as a specific race is part of the problem.) So even if I hated Japanese people (and I don't, I just find their popular ideologies disgusting -- much as I find Glenn Beck and neo-Conservatives in my own country disgusting) it wouldn't make me a racist. And yes, I have a problem with movies/books/whatever that are just trying to elicit an emotion from an audience without giving them anything specific to think about besides WOW WAR IS BAD. That makes for a terrible story because it doesn't have any real point other than to make you feel bad. Yes, suffering is bad. Wow, how profound.

Maybe you didn't mean it that way, especially since you're recommending another story about the bombings

Uh yeah, that was kind of the POINT of my comment -- I was explaining exactly why I had a problem with Grave of the Fireflies. I praised Barefoot Gen for being a better comic because it shows not only the horrors of war (of course I know war is horrible for civilians) but the MOTIVES behind peoples' actions. There's a great scene in Barefoot Gen where the boys are at this rally where this guy starts lambasting the Americans for essentially raping their country, but then Gen is like (and I'm obviously paraphrasing), "Hey, weren't you the same guy who was rallying everyone to go to war against the United States in the first place?" While the comic is brutally honest about the aftermath of the nuclear bombings and the brutality of American soldiers during occupation (complete with rape scenes -- there's a disturbing scene where Shinji and Gen come across a barrel at an American base and think it's food, but when they remove the lid it's full of condoms instead).

TL;DR Barefoot Gen is actually good because it makes you think, instead of just forcing an emotional response. That's not to say that most people don't have an emotional response to Barefoot Gen.

even if it was a necessary action at the time -- and say "nah I don't feel sorry for them because Japan deserved it"

I never said they deserved it, just that I refuse to feel sorry for characters in a movie that's trying INCREDIBLY HARD to make you feel sorry. That just makes for a poor film. Besides, the movie has no real plot besides WE'RE DYING.

Damn. You really should have watched it subbed. I watched it for the first time subbed, and THANK GOD I did, because the second time I tried the dubbed version and my god was it terrible. The English voice acting is horribly cast, really horribly. The girl who voices for the Japanese version is adorable and completely endearing, or at least I thought so. You should give that a try. I'm just sorry you had the experience ruined by the English version :/
