No problem; I love discussion!

Seriously, I love it too. Although I suspect because I don't have a high def TV to play it on I probably missed out on the full experience. Someday I'll play it again as it was made to be played and most likely be even more blown away by the graphics than I already was.

As far as the narrative goes, though, I spent most of the game wondering when the hell we were going to see some aspect of Ellen's character beyond "I must find my mother!" and "Woe, my past!" Everyone kind of got hosed in the character development department. XD;

I'm happy to report that I have beaten the game (including the extra sidequests from the Playstation store)! And the ending was glorious. Would be happy to talk about all the spoilerific stuff you want, although maybe we should take it to PMs in that case...?

Definitely with you about it making a great movie. I'd watch it. Full CGI? DO IT NOW!

I've written one fanfic for it so far (there's not even a section for it on ff.net *cries*) and hope to write more in the future. The one I wrote was kind of a character study for me to see if I could write Ellen and Keats in-character at all.

Where is this fanfic you speak of?! Oh, and there's a section in ff.net now, very few fics though, one I especially like.

I never had a problem with the narrative to be honest, since from the beginning I've always expected it to be a full-blown mystery game. I love how nuanced the characters here are (heck, not just Ellen and Keats but even the minor ones if you've done their quests) along with their developments (which I appreciated for its subtlety).

Holy crap I did not know they finally put a section in. YES! *proceeds to move hers out of the Misc. Games section to where it rightfully belongs* PROGRESS; I love it. ♥

Fic is here (although since I just moved it I'm not sure if the link will keep working; let me know if it doesn't): Laid to Rest (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4930511/1/Laid_to_Rest). Also, there is an LJ comm I'm trying to revive now because of how many people commented to your secret: [livejournal.com profile] bridge_house. :D

Oh, the mystery part was fine by me, it's just that Ellen came off to me as a little one-track minded through the whole thing. It would have been nice to know a little bit more about what her life in the city was like, and so on.

my thoughts, let me show you them ;;;

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I expected it to be a full-blown mystery game, too--that's the problem. It can be a mystery all it wants, that doesn't mean the story wasn't horrifically paced. The mystery wasn't so much ~*mysterious*~ as it just refused to explain anything; answers to questions were pointlessly delayed/dragged out nonsensically (e.g. a person could very well answer a simple question asked by the main characters but there's some lame excuse for them not to), which affected how the characters were developed, and you had no real understanding of their motivations until all the revelations, which were all stacked ontop of one another all in the climactic end-chapters, which... is not good storytelling.

A lot of the game's shining moments DID come out of the sidequests--actually those were my favorite parts of the game, since that was where I learned most about the characters (Ellen and Keats and a lot of the minor ones, as you said). And that's... again, not good storytelling. You shouldn't have to depend on optional content to understand the characters for the main plotline.

I'm saying all this as someone who honestly really does love the HELL out of that game, and replaying it, it comes together a lot less irritably than the first playthrough, knowing the end spoilers and all, but it's still really is severely flawed.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, haha.

I thought the way they handled the "mystery" was paced quite well and fit the atmospheric nature of the game. As for developing the characters through the sidequests, I don't really see that as the only factor. They may not have been as much fully developed in the main plot, but the nuances the characters carried more than made up for it. I suppose my stance on this has a lot to do with not really finding the need for characters to develop as much as they be given relevance and nuance, particularly for action/adventure games like Folklore. I think this is one of the few instances (in japanese gaming) that the art direction in the game gave the characters more personality and life than half the other games (with their trite and forced developments) released recently.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. I'm just happy there are other more fans of this! XD

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I don't really care either, I'm just supremely happy to be discussing this at all, so same here! Thanks for humoring me!

Honestly I wish I had your experience, it would have made my first playthrough a lot more interactive and less frustrating to me.

The art direction is absolutely stunning and definitely is what carries the game through. I'm so happy I got to experience it in HD and see it the way it was meant to be played.

It's definitely a game worth experience on HD TV--although I think that's true for every PS3 game, but Folklore especially.

I was so glad to discover that Ellen actually does have a personality that shows up pretty adorably in all the sidequests. Actually completing the sidequests (especially the DLC ones) were my favorite parts of the story, they filled up a lot of character development holes as well as missing plot elements.

HAHA MAN THAT'S BE AWSOME, though I was thinking more of live-action ghost story setting. That'd be fucking sweet.

WOULD IT BE TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR A LINK? I know my friend also wrote a small ficlet, here (http://moonsheen.livejournal.com/115409.html?thread=1021137#t1021137).

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought as much. Lack of money, for the lose. The PS3 was a gift.

That's true. I need to play them again and pay closer attention and start collecting tidbits for fic-related purposes. * . *

Anything, really. I mostly am rooting for a CGI movie just because I adore the CGI sequences in the game itself and would die a happy lady if I got to see 2+ hours of it.

I'M FLATTERED YOU'RE INTERESTED! Here you go! (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4930511/1/Laid_to_Rest) And thank you for the link to your friend's drabble; I'm off to go comment on it now! :D (Also, I lied - apparently there IS a Folklore section on ff.net now; no idea when it got there; it wasn't there when I posted my fic!)

Re: No problem; I love discussion!

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you. I just made a move and I had the option of taking an analog TV with me knowing I'd be losing the HD one. And after playing every PS3 game in HD, I honestly made the consious decision to go without a TV rather than play my games on anything less than HD orz I never thought I'd be so snobby.

Man I loved the CGI cutscenes in the game when they actually did 'em. I wanted more of them! With voice acting from Keats and Ellen! That would've been amazing. Keats could read a phone book and I'd be pleased.

Aaaah that fic was so cute! Thank you *_*

Re: No problem; I love discussion!

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there is an HD TV in my home it's just that my parents are addicted to television and I never get a chance to use it for myself. The TV up in my room is crappy and old. XD Once I find a JOB I will be trying to remedy that...

Oh man, tell me about it. Keats's voice is like... *melts*

Thank you!! I'm so glad people are enjoying it; it got really long on me and I was afraid the characterization would be all wrong since I'd never written for the game before.

Sorry, butting in!

But that ficlet was the cutest thing ever, short, but soooo cute. We really need to enliven the comm. Like right now!
