Other than laying off the booze, drugs, and tanning, there isn't a lot one can do to control how gracefully one ages. And I don't think that's a big deal, really.

Well Cary Grant used to tan constantly, it didn't seem to hurt him. Smoking supposedly ages one as well, but yep he did that too. I think "Deal with the Devil" is a possibility, though.

Yeah, but Cary Grant was around back when the chemically-tanned-leather-skin look was in :) Smoking makes you wrinkly and ages your skin a lot, and I think that shows in early/mid-20th century actors. They can still look good, but I sometimes think they're older than they actually are.

CG wore his tan as an alternative to make-up. The stage make-up of the era was pretty tough on skin, so maybe that was it.

I think I'm often surprised at how old the many of the actors in the Golden Age of Hollywood were when they made their most famous films. Myrna Loy, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis all made most of their best-remembered films after age thirty.

There seemed to be less fetishization of extreme youth for women in the Golden Era; Myrna Loy was still allowed to be charming and sexy as Nora in her 40s. Now actresses that age are often cougars, first wives, de-sexed moms, or invisible. I like living in the modern, post-feminist world, but there are some trends I wouldn't mind returning to. (I'd also love a return to accepting a greater variety of normal body shapes in women in media, but that's another issue entirely.)
