Honestly, same. I watched TNG largely due to Wesley Crusher (I mean, yeah, I was also a Star Trek fan), and I loved the Ewoks. I had (still have) a Wicket plushie. Didn't know they were hated, and I don't care.

Fandom is the place for try-hard self-indulgence. That is literally its purpose. We're not academics looking for a good grade in Fanfic Studies, we're self-indulgent nerds having fun smooshing our favorite characters together or putting them through crazy shenanigans or shipping them with our silly self-inserts.

If your writing degree is preventing you from appreciating the joy of good old-fashioned self-indulgence, I kind of feel sorry for you.

Knowing when you need to step away for a while is something not everyone knows how to do, and frankly, more people should learn how to take a break and avoid toxicity or becoming toxic themselves.

I liked Wesley. As I got older, I could see how people might find the character annoying, sure. But as a kid, I loved seeing someone only a little older than I was in such an exciting place, having adventures. I envied Wesley!

But I have no time for people who are delusional enough to dislike Wil Wheaton for this character, or for people who think "Shut up Wesley" is the epitome of wit - especially if you say this to the actor himself. Grow up, you guys.
