I know you’re far from alone at being annoyed at fanfiction writers who do that kind of thing.

Personally, I find it hard to begrudge writers who “file off the serial numbers” and rework their fic into something they can publish. The writing definitely owes its inspiration to the original canon, but if they’ve done the work to differentiate it enough that a naive reader wouldn’t consider it an adaptation… well, it doesn’t bother me.
