Genuine question: how did you think that Alexa Barajas playing Mari Ibarra was a Japanese actress playing a Japanese character?

(Anonymous) 2025-05-08 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't know the actress's name and also thought Ibarra didn't sound impossibly un-Japanese. Doesn't help that I didn't see the spelling.

Fair enough!

nayrt, but Ibara (spelled with only one "r") is also a city in Okayama, Japan. If I didn't know the actress' real name, I might guess she was of mixed Asian heritage.

DA "Ibara Mari" def could sound like an unusual but not unbelievable japanese name

(Anonymous) 2025-05-08 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Ibara" with one r is the Japanese word for "thorn," so yeah.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-08 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit that would fit the character!

(Anonymous) 2025-05-08 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Mari is a pretty common Japanese given name, and Ibara is a less common but actual Japanese family name.

Yeah, if I just heard the name "Mari Ibarra" and didn't see it written out to know that it had two Rs in it instead of just one, I would assume it was Japanese.
