i have no idea what OP means and can't speak for them, but it's Buck's actual maturity, especially compared to Chin or Hen, as well as just experience, that would make Buck being Captain ridiculous to me, not legal requirements.

ayrt

I know he's younger than both Chim and Hen and doesn't have nearly the time on the job, but if they, for some reason, didn't want it, he's been with the same house for at least 9 years (this is the 8th season, I think he was at the end of his probationary period when the show started and there have been some time skips). And yes, he can be hot-headed and has made some poor decisions, but that's equally true for Bobby. And Chim. And Hen. And almost every other character on this soap opera of a show. As it stands, I think he would be a better captain than Gerrard, which I know is a low bar, but that dude was captain of the 118 twice. That's not to say I think he's necessarily the best choice, just that logistically, in both the real world and the show world (one that has had a bee-nado and many other outlandish happenings), it doesn't seem out of line.

Buck hasn't even been promoted to lieutenant yet, has he? Usually you spend 5 years or more as lt before being promoted to captain. If neither Chim or Hen, for some reason, didn't want a huge promotion and pay raise, TPTB would likely bring in someone with enough seniority from another house.

^^^This. He plain lacks seniority, whereas Hen and Chimney both have 10 or 15 years on Buck. Or, more likely they would bring a captain in from a different station just to mix things up.
