Re: Anime

I still think of myself as an anime fan because Old Habits and remain in the fandoms for my old faves deemed relevant enough for reboots and posterity. But haven't watched any new anime ... in 5 years.

The last one I recall really enjoying was Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju and I would eat up any anime with adult characters, particularly josei. But I love being childfree so the trend of nuclear family anime bored me :/

I would love josei recs if you have any to suggest!

Sure! Most of these which are based on manga I have read it as well.

My first would be the aforementioned Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju if you have an interest in Japanese arts and culture. It represents the art of rakugo brilliantly and is very thrilling. The anime is very well produced, way worth it over manga. Akira Ishida as the mc is just -chef's kiss-

Similarly, Chihayafuru presents karuta very nicely though it feels more shoujo-y despite being technically josei. I reckon the manga is super pretty but it's nice to see karuta action.

Akatsuki no Yona is shoujo but its approach feels more like a josei in the same way that, say, pre-2000 shoujo - it's gritty at times and really a lot of fun to see the dynamics between characters.

Hatenkou Yuugi is josei but feels shoujo though the manga feels more seinen. So take this one with a grain of salt but I think it's cute enough to deserve a mention. Really wish the manga was fully adapted.

Honey & Clover is another favorite of mine, it revolves around a group of art university students and its very sweet and tearful. The first few eps can be a bore at first but trust the ride. The manga is very similar so no point in reading if you adjust to the slow pace of the anime.

Obligatory mentions to Paradise Kiss and NANA which gen zs will never let us forget apparently but I think it's well-deserved - Ai Yazawa's portrayals of Heisei era urban tribes is great. Both anime are well produced. Good stuff!

Antique Bakery is another from the 2000s, it's more on the boys love adjacent lane of josei (think Loveless but nowhere as gritty) but there's no actually boys love just very chill vibes and men struggling to make a business thrive.

Netojuu no Susume is more recent, about a hikikomori woman who meets people in an MMO. Very comedic, good fun if you like MMOs.

Kuragehime is another favorite of mine personally, though it can be very hit-or-miss. Also a comedy about a hikikomori girl but rather different. TBH I never read the manga but it is longer than the anime so it was a good reminder 😅

Kiss Him Not Me is similarly about a hikikomori girl but it's more shoujo and some events weren't well received in some circles... still I had fun watching it.

Sakamichi no Apollon deserves a mention as well IMO for its interesting portrait of a group of jazz loving teens in IIRC 60s Japan - very informative!

Speaking of young people playing instruments, Nodame Cantabile seems to be fun. I'll admit never having gotten past the first few episodes for one reason or the other but it's in my backlog. My backlog also has the likes of Wotakoi, SNAFU Romantic Comedy, Shirobako, Yuru Camp, Utakoi, RisPara, Petshop of Horrors, that Takarazuka one, Tsurune s2 as I loved s1 etc

These are some I remembered from the top of my head, but my MAL has 300 titles on watched and like 300 more as a backlog so if you want me to try and remember more I can check it. I just save every josei-adjacent anime there lol.

No worries, hope it helps!

(Kiss Him Not Me is actually about a fujoshi high schooler I just got my explanation mixed up as I had mentioned Kuragehime which is about a hikikomori fujoshi - sorry)
