Yeah, I don't think he's particularly mean, but that's his reputation. I'd say he's more tough and less inclined to hold bakers to a higher standard and say so if they haven't met it. Mary would acknowledge faults in the bake, but try to say something nice.

Pru sometimes just sounds mean. Not helpful, just mean and critical. That's more suitable for a show like Great British Menu where you're talking to professional chefs in a competition that's more hard-edged, but not for GBBO. So you ended up with two "tough" judges, but any scenario where Paul is the good guy is LOL. Pru did soften up over time and she became a bit more tactful, but she's no Mary Berry.
