But "it's a genre convention, so it can't be bad writing" is also specious.

No one made that argument. There can absolutely be badly written melodrama, but the mere existence of melodrama in a genre designed for melodrama does not mean the entire genre is bad writing.

OP is pretty clearly making that argument.

No. OP says just because you don't like the tropes doesn't make it bad writing. Not that all of those tropes are always perfectly executed and can NEVER be bad writing. "It's a bug, not a feature" (and the other way around) is a meme.

Let's do some language analysis.

Every time I see someone loudly complain about the OTT melodrama in Chinese BL novels and calls it "bad writing", all I can think is "It's a feature, not a bug". You can dislike it, obviously, but just because you do doesn't mean it's objectively bad.

Now, that first part: they are talking about people complaining about OTT melodrama specifically in Chinese BL novels. What is it about Chinese BL novels that would lead people to complain about melodrama? Is there a trend or maybe cultural significance of melodrama in such a genre? Why would someone consider a trend or cultural marker to necessitate bad writing?

Next: The "It's a feature, not a bug." statement. Could this be implying that the melodrama is, if not the point of the work, a very large expected part of it? What would this imply about the people who complain about the goal of the authors in this genre? Does this imply anything about the writing ability of the authors to achieve their goal? Is OP implying that the criticism is of the individual writing or of the driving force of the genre as a whole?

Next: the last part. What is OP saying with this sentence? Why do they make the obvious statement that people are allowed to dislike melodrama? Are they implying that people who dislike melodrama are wrong for disliking it? Are they implying that no matter the writing style, so long as a work matches the genre expectations it must therefor be good writing? Are they implying that if you like a certain type of genre you must therefore regard everything written in it as good writing?
