the only disagree here is that the trio was bad in any way. they did damn good considering the absolutely ass direction they received, and the scripts themselves also being ass.

I came into HP late and had already been burned by the LOTR movies, so I had low expectations, but holyhell did these movies just keep getting worse as time went on. no director could salvage them, no not even del Toro. If anything, Azkaban is worse for standing out as Not Like The Others. but ugh the last 20-25 years have not been kind to adapting source material at all.

Off topic but...

Finally, someone else who didn't like the LOTR movies! Books forever!

BOOK PURIST

I feel bad wading into any f!s discussions of current LOTR fandoms because I hate the movies so much. I was burned so hard I can't recover.

Whether they're good or not, the movies ARE iconic and beloved by a majority of casual fans, who are the main type of fan you'll meet outside of HP fan groups on the internet. They're the ones who will determine whether the show is watched by enough people to be a success or not. It won't be fandom.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s going to be a huge success because it’s being made for the next generation of fans, the majority of whom aren’t interested in their parents’ childhood faves. Sure plenty of kids still read the books and some watch the movies but the majority of them don’t care about HP because it’s something that belongs to their parents. This will be for them.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. The older fans are not the target demographic anymore. And the kiddos might go nuts for it.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care about Harry Potter, but this bums me out.

My parents loved The Wizard of Oz and Heidi and The Sound of Music. I didn't need modern adaptations with different actors and special effects to be able to enjoy these just as much as they did.

Are kids just more entitled now? A movie series that ended 14 years ago is too ancient for them?

(Anonymous) 2025-05-17 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
From what I’ve witnessed it isn’t that their parents liked the things, it’s that their parents are still actively deeply in love with the things. Not just HP but plenty of other series, too. Although HP does have the unusual distinction that many of the fans who grew up with have defined themselves by it and even in their 30s will decorate their homes in the HP house color and engage in all sorts of OTT behavior.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-17 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
All of those things looked like they could have been made the day before you watched them. That’s not true for kids now. Media style and quality has changed so much that a movie from 25 years ago looks wrong to kids who are growing up on 2020s media.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
In terms of being doomed, I haven't heard the "can't top the movies" reason. Although I'm sure much of the original audience never read the books and only saw the movies, so I guess they'd be disappointed when the series isn't the same.

I don't know if it's doomed. Hard to tell. I occasionally get excited for it and then remember that HP is where fun goes to die and keep scrolling.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really see where the books' quality was so superior to the movies.

They're pretty similar levels of quality? If you think one is bad, the other is equally bad. If you think one is great, the other is equally great.

I feel like most HP fans haven't actually read the books in 20 years and assume that because they were impressed when they were 15, the writing quality would stay equally impressive at 35

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
SA Same with the movies, w/r/t 15 vs 35

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I was in my late 20s/early 30s when the books were coming out, and I don't think any of us were standing in line at midnight for quality writing. We just had to know what happened next.

I've reread them in the past few years, and I still enjoy the later books (5-7). They check off all the enjoyable archetypes of the hero's journey.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, what I'm getting from this is books 1-4 are mediocre to you and you don't enjoy them, which is more than half the series.

Unless the TV series is starting at book 5, I don't think the secret re: book quality vs movie quality makes much sense?

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
School is fun (when you're just reading about it at least)

(Anonymous) 2025-05-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I’m a couple years younger than you and hard agree. This is just one of those topics where FS thinks that entertainment being enjoyable isn’t enough to qualify it as entertainment.

Right? They’re mid books that got turned into mid movies and have a fanbase riding off of the nostalgia wave of it all, which is fine but quality they are not and never have been.

I always thought the actors were good, but the movies were bad. They were very obviously kids movies and kids are the majority of the audience that liked them. Those kids are now grown up and have mega nostalgia tinted glasses.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the set design and music were great, plus how the effects were used to build the setting, some scenes are so memorable. I haven't rewatched in a long time because it's just not really my thing anymore but still remember lots of details.

It will fail.

It won’t but it’s so cute that you think you’re the target audience.

The thing is - the movies were and are more accessible than the tv series is going to be; because its going to be on a streaming service that will be easy to not watch unless you happen to be paying for HBO Max.
Sure there's pirating, but I'm sure that's not going to be successful for the official release.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
A whole bunch of people paid for HBO just to watch GoT and then canceled their subscription.

"Sure there's pirating, but I'm sure that's not going to be successful for the official release."

What do you mean by that? Most people aren't tech savvy and will probably cancel their subscription when the show ends, but I've watched streamed shows on third party sites because I don't like how streaming is temporary.
