I was absolutely shocked when I first heard people talk about their chemistry or shipping it. I did not have that takeaway at all.

Agreed. I was surprised that people came away thinking he genuinely cared about her. But maybe that’s more shipping-headcanon than actual interpretation of the film.

I always thought part of seeing the chemistry came from self-inserting or already finding the premise appealing, tbh, I didn't pick up on it either.
