Agreed. The main theme of the movie is Sarah's growing up and how conflicted she feels about it - on the one hand doing more child-like things like dressing up and playacting in the park, on the other hand experiencing the beginnings of romantic/sexual attraction and not fully realizing what those feelings are. The ballroom scene is a young teen's fantasy of being grown up, beautiful and gorgeously dressed, attracting the attention of a mysterious and handsome man. But it's also rather menacing and a bit scary at the same time. Very apt description of what it's like to come of age, no?

Exactly. It's a coming of age story of a teen with her sexual fantasies and all.
