As it should be.

I think you're right. I just finished reading Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell and What Feasts At Night by T. Kingfisher. Both are queernormative settings and have, respectively, an asexual lesbian protagonist and a nonbinary protagonist. The worldbuilding and identity incorporation in the first one made no sense to me—it was medieval but they had terms like "allosexual," which are not just modern but arise from a very 19th century sociological history, and wouldn't necessarily occur to a goo-monster who hadn't spent much time around humans. The latter was a world closer to ours temporality but she subtly included organic worldbuilding elements, such as the use of special pronouns for God and priests. While it was clear that the protagonist was nonbinary from context, it was also clear that being nonbinary meant something a little different and more specific to that setting than it does in ours.

Obviously people who have a problem with queer and trans identities in general would have issues with both, but if the issue is worldbuilding and immersion, there are ways to do it that feel like they fit the setting and not just Tumblr.

Question about a comment secret

(Anonymous) 2025-05-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi guys, secret maker here. I'm a bit confused by this comment and I'm not sure what it's referring to:

https://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/3212340.html?thread=1141027124#cmt1141027124

Could it be this?

https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/A_Ranger_in_King_Arthur%27s_Court

I was hoping the OP (or anyone else who knows) could clue me in on the fandom/episode/whatever, because I'm struggling to find a relevant image.

Thank you!

For cartoons Smurfs, SuperTed, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, Tao Tao, and Dr Snuggles. Different anime series were shown on sundays and those were usually my favorite things on TV.

For live shows Knight Rider and Battlestar Galactica (+Mcgyver when I was a bit older).

Mine is Kramer for sure.

TW: Pet Loss

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2025-05-25 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
My BIL and sister had to put their 13 year old dog to sleep today. It isn't a complete surprise, they'd known it was coming this year but they were hoping for another months or so. He'd had trouble walking/standing and had a wound that kept opening back up. Yesterday, he collapsed around noon and just did not have the energy to walk (even to eat). So, they decided to call the mobile vet to come out today (the vet is currently at their house). Kraken was loved by everyone in our family (he stayed at my house every day before she moved to live with her husband).

I've been morally supporting her and my BIL as well as I can over messaging. I want to get them something else as well but not sure what. Flowers have always seemed like a weird thing to send people after a loss because that is just something that will die. I thought about a live plant but she already has so many, she has a new cat that chews on plants, and I feel like it would be horrible if it died one day. I thought of getting her a Door Dash gift card so they don't have to worry about feeding themselves. But it feels impersonal. Any ideas*?

*he will be cremated and a memorial created by the mobile vet. She has many photos of him and I created a custom Funko Pop of him for her a couple years ago.

That is because, while awful, she was also the best. What a feminine icon of the 90s she was.

Crochet question/design opinion?

(Anonymous) 2025-05-25 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I am making a lap blanket for my brother with his requested colors. I have been switching colors every round but I am thinking of now doing two rounds per color until the end. I am not great at visualizing things but I thought it would give a kind neat look as it expands? I'm unsure if I'm going to do a proper border so I thought this could also give it a nice psuedo border look.

Anyone have any opinions on the matter?

One person sent me a card when my dog died and I was so touched and it really meant a lot. Any gesture of acknowledgement and shared sadness will mean a lot I'm sure, try not to over think it and just go with something simple.

Punky Brewster, Astroboy, Battle of the Planets, ALF. In my mid teens I actually loved watching Nickelodeon stuff like Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life and Rugrats.

We had the vet come put my boy down a month ago. He was loved by a lot of people and we got several incredible gifts. Food and flowers of course but a few standout items were a shadow box to mount his paw print mold and a memorial wind chime. The dangling bit on the wind chime reads: Hear the wind and think of me. In your heart I’ll always be.

It also has his name and 2025 on it. If I’m being totally honest, I’d prefer it either didn’t have a date or it had all of his dates on it like a human’s headstone would.

I don’t know where the wind chimes came from but you can probably find some of you Google. The shadow box came from Amazon and we had to buy a second because we had two imprints done (we wanted one for home and one for my husband’s office). Here’s the link: https://a.co/d/bpqGP8v

One last suggestion is if you can sew to maybe make a memory bear or even a small pillow if he had clothing or blankets he snuggled in. It would be extra special if you could include a bit of his hair in there. But not all dogs have clothes or bedding that could be repurposed that way.

But we didn't have cable growing up, just 4 or 5 channels on the TV and kids shows were only on at certain times, plus we just didn't watch much.

I do remember loving Today's Special on PBS. Oh and later they did have cartoons on after school, I remember Tale Spin and Rescue Rangers.

But as an adult I got cable and loved the early 2000s cartoon network. Gundam Wing, Samurai Jack, PPG, and then later Adventure Time, are still all favorites.

I'll check Walmart tomorrow to see if they have any good cards. If not, I'll check out Etsy. I just don't want to order something and it take two weeks to get to me, then another week to get to her (especially since I am visiting them in two weeks for this birthday.

Thank you secret maker! Perfect image choice too.

I’m the anon from below: we got several cards and they mean the world to me. I put all of them in a keepsake box on a shelf where we have pictures of all of our pets. I’ve added other random bits from my dog’s life like the little bow tie from his first birthday and his puppy collar. Cards go a long way! And so do keepsake boxes.

I think the vet will be providing a shadow box and such. It is a service they do along with the cremation. I'll look into wind chimes. I found one that sounds like the one you got.

I can't sew but I do know someone who makes memory bears and such. He doesn't have clothes but he had many beds and blankets. Obviously, I'll ask her first in case she is wanting to do something with them.

Do you think I should try to get a custom card even though it would take longer? My sister is an artist so I would need to make sure to find something that isn't AI or stolen.

Just as a data point, Mine was just a general blank inside "sorry for your loss" card with a very kind note written on the inside.
