Maybe, but I don't care.

Why? Because Darren reminds me of those guys who get mad because their wife makes more money than they do.

A normal, good husband says, "Yay for you!" when you get a huge raise. A normal, good husband to a witch would say, "Yay! Can you make some barbecue appear for dinner?"

He just wants to hide her light under a bushel. Fuck you, Darren!

Omg, this. I watched that show as a kid, but the fact that he wanted her to NOT use her magic, and she went along with it, always made me mad.

Right?

It's like telling your musician partner "you can't play the piano."

And magical powers would be amazing! I get that you probably wouldn't want everyone to know if there was some danger in it like Samantha being burned at the stake, but that is not in the show we saw.

DA, but yeah. If the characters don't live in a miserable theocracy, I'd much rather find out what their life became *with exciting powers* than what the show actually did. And if they do, then what is this man doing, forcing his amazing wife to try to be less than she is instead of realizing they need to go somewhere less backwards?? Darrin the insecure is a complete fail.

So agreed. I could never get into that show because of this. he was such an ass.

LOL, right? I watched this show from time to time as a kid and thought what a boring loser Darren was, if I had witch power nobody would ever stop me from using them. Especially not a lame husband!

I remember finding their relationship kind of uncomfortable as a child and I can’t quite remember why. (Not as uncomfortable as I Dream of Jeannie, of course.)

With the vaguest of memories, I think I didn’t like that he wanted to hide her weirdness and that she (and her mother?) tended to “handle” him like a bumbling child. Pretty run-of-the-mill for TV couples of the era, as I now know, but I didn’t see much “domestic comedy” TV at that age.

They did (sort of, kind of) course correct this in the episode where Endora bets Samantha that Darren wouldn't have married her had he known she was a witch beforehand. Endora sent Samantha back in time to the night he proposed, she managed to tell him she was a witch (after a couple of tries), and he obviously married her anyway. But, yeah, I was always baffled as to why she couldn't use her magic at home-- at least for laundry, cleaning, cooking, repairs. Even Tony let Jeannie take him to Paris for lunch that one time.

I would just use magic for this and the mofo would never know.

"I'm so tired from all this housework! Rub my feet!"

I think OP's point is well made, and yet I also agreed with all the "Darren wasn't supporting his wife" posts.

Yeah... not my fandom brain just wants crossovers where Samantha and Jeanie meet.
