I'm so mad

(Anonymous) 2025-06-07 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I know I shouldn't be mad, but I'm so mad.

People saying a game I play is ableist because it has a flashing red light in it. The game warns about the light. Someone said they could make the light solid red instead of flashing, and I pointed out that solid red lights can exacerbate symptoms in people who have chronic migraines, and they responded by...blocking me.

And I'm fucking mad about it! I'm mad because I've spent my entire life with disability, and these people...these fucking people are all performing. They're all about accessibility and inclusivity, but they always have a line, right? They attack others for saying, "maybe this thing just isn't for some people," but themselves have a point where they'll say the same thing, and where they'll say that a particular accommodation goes too far. And they never, ever show up when actual government policy is at stake. As far as I can tell, they use disabled people for self-aggrandizement, and as an excuse to berate and talk down to other people. They don't give a shit about anything that would actually help. A different setting on a video game does not save any fucking lives, and frankly doesn't affect most people. But they act like they're the fucking Pope for saying, "but if they weren't ableist they could just make the red light solid!"

I know I should calm down but I can't. I have spent the past decade watching people like this talk a big fucking game on Twitter or whatever, spend all day finding pile-ons to join, but then not show up in real life, when it actually matters. I am so sick and tired of this crap.

Totally understandable frustration. You made me curious, do you suffer migraines exacerbated by solid red light? Mine are often triggered by flashing lights and strobing, solid lights are fine unless it's very bright ime. I'm looking this up now lol, I guess it's a migraine trigger for some people. The more you know!

AYRT

I don't, thankfully. I have a friend who does, and we roomed together for a couple of years, so I saw just how bad it could be.

Pity these people, for being so stupid they don't understand the concept of competing accessibility. And honestly, they probably don't want to understand, because they're so fucking stupid that they also don't understand that virtue signaling does not make them good people, which is what they want most in the world (without actually having to do anything).

That person's protest feels very performative, the way a lot of fandom "activism" feels these days. My guess is that they're mad because they thought they won and you one-upped them unexpectedly.

My .02 is that you can't expect a piece of media to be all things to everyone. The game warned about the flashing light, that's good. I don't think they need to modify it just to avoid the ableist label.

Yes, and the line is "thing I don't like is evil and inaccessible, but thing I like is totally accessible uwu and if you don't like it you are evil and/or a fake disabled person."

I'm someone who does have flashing lights as a migraine trigger and I agree with you.

Somewhat off-topic, but this is the first time I've ever heard of non-flashing lights causing problems for people (I mean not in the "don't shine a bright light in my face" way).

How do those people deal with real life things like driving? Because where I live, it's very common to have flashing red lights signaling pedestrian crosswalks that are operated by a pedestrian pushing a button to activate the stoplight so that they can cross. When a pedestrian pushes the button, the flashing red lights turn solid red to indicate that traffic needs to stop, then returns to flashing once the pedestrian has crossed.

Do these not exist elsewhere or something?
