Re: Uncontroversial Opinions Thread
(Anonymous) 2025-06-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)My point about idiots being influenced by anything is that there are certain people who don't understand what is going on, either through natural consequences of their biology or through under- or mis-education. These people will believe things that anyone tells them if it sounds good enough, because they don't have the tools they need to be able to sort the wheat from the chaff.
These problems that they will need to navigate will not disappear because you want them to. These are the same problems that bitcoin and gambling and gaslighting present. They are not problems restricted to just kids. These are things that everyone will have to navigate and decide for the rest of their lives because we don't live in a Disneyland world. Sheltering people from them via censorship leaves them vulnerable to people who would use their inability to detect bullshit and bad ideas.
This is just another one of the many reasons why censorship is bad.
Re: Uncontroversial Opinions Thread
(Anonymous) 2025-06-09 05:01 am (UTC)(link)And this has been a long-term source of frustration for me with the organized left in the US, which I used to consider myself a part of back when they treated arguing about stuff they cared deeply about like a valid way of getting people to support them. When they reverted to "everyone will believe this, because my political party has power and now I can just force anyone saying things I don't like to shut up," I knew they were in for one hell of a fall the next time they were voted out. Because authoritarianism was driving people away from the reactionary right, and "you should accept this is true because only the bad people doubt it" was always an extremely weak argument.
