I just thought she was a brat.

Really? I guess it depends on how you define "brat".

I remember her as having pretty standard child issues: lashing out when she's bullied, being a bit late and clumsy, following her curiosity into trouble, etc.

Probably suffering from issues because her parents are dead and she is at risk of being taken away from her only family.

Yeah, that makes it even more understandable.

I'd probably still not call her a brat if she had none of that going on. Kids sometimes just have poor impulse control and recognition of risks.

I’ve never heard that take before so now I’m curious about when you saw it, like if you were a kid yourself or older. If it’s been a while, I highly recommend watching it again. That may not change your mind about Lilo and that’s not actually why I recommend it. I just think it’s a fantastic movie that has more social commentary and more heart than it ever got credit for having. And it’s all still relevant today (unfortunately).

NAYRT

There was a "take" going around in 2020 that Lilo was abusive.

"no no your honor ... the child was abusing ME!"

yeaaaah noooo . Also the same person said a bunch of weird shit about indigenous Hawaiians and how they have a "kill haoles (white /non native ppl) holiday", so she sounds racist and unhinged

(I remember watching that whole thing go down.
