I do this too. It sort of sucks, but then...they're my fantasties and no one has to know them except me.

Don't worry, anon, that just proves that your brain is working properly. I noticed when I was really depressed that I no longer featured in my own fantasies. Now I am well again, there I am, centre stage!

Funny, my brain works in entirely the opposite way. When I'm depressed I fantasize a lot more. Now that I'm not, I'm more concerned with the 'real world'.

I used to do this rampantly when I was younger. I grew out of it, but I would never judge anyone for doing it. It's natural.

Oh, dude, I totally do that too. And, well, I've gotta say, it's inspired me to take matters into my own hands and actually try and meet/talk to these people, and while I'm still an overexcitable spaz, I have exchanged words successfully with several of my crushees (Johnny, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, etc) and while they weren't exactly like "I MUST HAVE YOU NOW," it was nice and I was glad my insanity gave me confidence, y'know? As long as you don't take it to an insane place, I think it's harmless fun. (I know what you mean about it ruining the fun, though. There's an unfortunate after-effect of missing the person horribly once you've actually met them. It's super-nutty.)

Don't worry, I think crushes are supposed to work like that. Harmless fantasies of meeting them kind of enhance the exhilaration.

Still do, OP. A little under a year ago I tore myself up over it, after seeing what a couple of truly deluded fanthings were doing, after the object of their obsession turned out to be different from the image they'd become captivated by. That, combined with the knowledge that it's not good to pin your moods and emotional well-being on someone who doesn't know you exist...but fuck it all, I stopped caring. It helps me sort things out a bit and I can keep it out of the real world just fine. We all need silly little dreams.

Here is another one who does the same, even if it embarrasses me greatly. I imagine really silly things like encountering Jemaine Clemment at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and him being impressed by something I say about a piece of artwork. Powerfully lame, I know.

I do the same thing. With fannish crushes, too. And I know that it's completely silly because my current favorite characters are a) not real, b) from the 70s, and c) British. Why they would need to take refuge in some grad student's Ohio apartment, I don't know.

Until we start marrying them on the Astral Plane, though, I think we're more or less sane. ;)

I think somewhere deep inside we all know we are beautiful and fully deserving of having our "dream love" fall for us, so we use the fantasies as a way to boost the self-esteem that the world tries to tear down. I enjoy it. :)

That's odd, I'm just the opposite. I find MarySue-ish fantasies unavoidable when I get really into a new fandom. But when I get a celeb crush or get into an rpf fandom, I never have any interest in a Mary Sue kind of scenario.

...What do people who don't have fantasies do when they have a crush exactly? Do they skip the Mary Sue bit and go straight to the sex dreams, or something? :) Otherwise isn't it just a "ooh, pretty" moment and move on?

Needless to say, I thought everyone did this. I certainly do.

This feels so good to read.
When I was younger (like really young) I used to think I was alone with these slightly ridiculous phantasies. That thought of being so different from everybody else was just terrible and it made me feel so weird. But eventually I discovered fandoms (and their very secret secrets) and it got better.
So one reason why I love sleeping so much is because that's the time for my Mary-Sue to come to life.

Late commenter says, me too! It's certainly complicated by the whole am-I-confusing-the-actor-with-the-character thing, which makes me feel kinda dirty.
