Actually, I always thought that way, OP. Especially since Brett's leaving was just after Madusa went to the WCW with the WWF's womens championship title, and on live television threw it in the trash. It was a huge embarrassment for the WWF. And Brett was not leaving on good terms. Why would anyone expect Vince to take a chance of that happening again? Also, if you're leaving a company? Do it with grace and class (Oh, Andre the Giant, I still love you), and not like a stubborn little boy.

Yessssssssssssss. I mean, I actually love Bret. I still think he was one of the best professional wrestlers ever. But the way he behaved a few months before, and then years after he left the WWF/WWE? Rather childish.

IIRC, Bret was under the impression he was leaving on pretty okay terms, right up until that point. I think that's part of the reason he was so pissed.

But Bret's impression of the situation wasn't the situation, at all. He wasn't really seeing the big picture. Also, he was ruffling feathers in his last few months, and not just Vince's. I'm not saying that it wasn't a moment of "WTF?", but I can see why Vince panicked.

And also, all his behavior towards it, and the people who were and sometimes even were not a part of it? Ridiculous.

Yeah, but Hart was pretty upfront that he wasn't taking the title with him. He was going to wrestle his last match for Vince, retire and give up the title gracefully, and just walk away. Now all of that is of course debatable, but I don't know; I just give the benefit of the doubt to Hart. If you really love him, then you must know a good deal about him. Do you really think he would be that much of an ass as to take it with him? I honestly believe he would have relinquished the damn thing if given the opportunity.

As far as I can recall, Bret's problem was not dropping the belt, it was dropping the belt to Shawn Michaels in front of his home crowd as the culmination of a highly charged and very personal rivalry. He felt it would be a slap in the face to his fans and to his character. IIRC, it had been agreed he would wrestle to a double DQ with Shawn, and he was expecting that he would then drop the belt on Raw (I wanna say to the Undertaker?). But Vince was panicked that WCW might announce they'd signed Bret while he still held the belt, and decided he had to get it off Bret as soon as possible. I'm sure neither side were entirely saintly, and you can think what you will about Bret's personal investment in his storyline, but I don't think he was ever under the impression he was going to get to keep the belt forever.

Shawn admitted on an episode of Confidential (if you remember/know that show) that he knew, and consistently lied for years about not knowing.

I have to agree. Vince had no reason to keep the belt on him if he was leaving, especially on bad terms. I'm sure at the time both parties were pretty much of bad terms with one another, but no one will ever see that Hart is at fault as well.

I wish the whole thing would disappear forever, or that it didn't happen. I've heard both sides of the story so many times. *sigh*

I'd like to think it could have been dealt with more cleanly if they were totally honest with each other. But both sides made sneaky moves and share the blame. It came out looking unprofessional as all hell, and divided the fans in what should have been a behind-the-scenes drama.

I hope Brett getting inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame is symbolic of forgiveness and burying that grudge, for both parties.
