i mean it's 100% gendered, but its gendered in the way many many group words are gendered, i.e. unless you're using it as a direct interjection (like "dude!"), it's going to indicate to listeners that there's at least one man being referenced.

so how people feel about it tends to depend on how they feel about "mankind" and such and it's probably changing quite a bit now that people recognize non-binary gender.
