I feel like not being scared comes with time and work. As I get older I've found myself caring less and less about what others think. But I've also put a lot of work in my own self esteem and comfort in my body and opinions. It's easy for people to say "fuck it, do what you want!" and while it's true, it's not that easy. But you can get there! Also, comfort comes with exposure. Wear what you love to wear and it might make you a little uncomfortable or socially anxious or whatever at first but you keep doing what you love and you'll get more and more comfortable with it.

I'm late 30's and I dress alt/goth, I am by social standards 'too old' to be wearing this kind of fashion but I literally couldn't care less. I'm going to be 70 still wearing my alt tops and dresses.

Remember that you wouldn't have to make the entire change all at once. You could get one or two pieces that work with your current clothing, or you could just change up your accessories. Go for more later if/when you feel comfortable.

I never stopped wearing low-rise because it's comfortable and looks great on me and mid-rise is uncomfortable and looks like shit. I didn't give a damn that it was out of style - and now it's in style again! So you do you. The world will come around.

But did she /have/ a choice in the matter? The short story goes into things more in detail, but there's a whole question as part of the plot about whether anything is /changing/ the future versus simply /experiencing/ what we perceive as the future. And even if she did make a choice, if she had made any other choice, she wouldn't have been experiencing that life at all.
